Regional Updates and Equipment Lists

UPDATED: 1/23/2020

Advisors:
You are not required to mail the CTSO Release Form in with your registration, you only need to have completed copies for each attendee with you at the conference in the case of an emergency.

Contestants:
  • Competitors should bring a one-page hard copy résumé to their contest on the day of competition at the regional level. Failure to do so will result in a ten point penalty.
  • Contestants MUST follow national standards for dress for each specific competition at both the regional and state level, found in the SkillsUSA Championship Technical Standards. Advisors will have an assigned pin to access the technical standards once they become a professional member of SkillsUSA.
  • All other attendees must adhere to the official  SkillsUSA Tennessee dress code.

Basic agenda for all regional events:
  • 8 – 9 a.m. – Registration
  • 9 – 12 p.m. – Regional Contests
  • 12 -1:30 p.m. – Lunch
  • 2 p.m. – Awards *Please note that the award ceremony may start at later time based on when the scoring of all contests has been completed.

 The SkillsUSA competition theme for the 2020 year is:
  •  SkillsUSA: Champions at Work, I'm Ready
  • The topic to be addressed by contestants in the Chapter Display, Prepared Speech and Promotional Bulletin Board competitions is how our theme addresses the SkillsUSA national program of work in the area of professional development.

Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) Regional Update:
  • The Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair contest took the place of the four single shot contests. Therefore, a school can only have one (1) competitor in this contest. The top four MLR competitors from each region will advance to the State Leadership and Skills Conference in Chattanooga.
  • If your school registered more than one Automotive MLR contestant, only one of them will be able to compete at the regional conference.

Contest-specific Updates

Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) – Contestants are allowed to bring their own scan tool for the contest. Students entered in the MLR contest will perform tasks related to the standards for MLR as listed below:
  • explore career opportunities and requirements of a professional service technician; content emphasizes beginning transportation service skills and workplace success skills; safety, tools, equipment, shop operations, basic engine fundamentals, and basic technician skills
  • automotive general electrical systems, starting and charging systems, batteries, lighting, and electrical accessories
  • service suspension and steering systems and brake systems
  • service automotive HVAC systems, engine performance systems, automatic and manual transmission/transaxle systems, and workplace soft skills
  • MLR Scorecard

Automotive Service Technology – Will complete all 4 sections of MLR single shots and take an overall knowledge exam. Students competing in the automotive regional contests should be familiar with all four MLR level tasks.​
  • AST Scorecard

Carpentry – Contestants should follow SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards. Contestants should also bring a set of saw horses. Calculator use is allowed. Contestants in construction contests must bring and wear hardhats at all times while in the competition area.

Cosmetology – Contestants will perform one long hair design and one women’s design hair cut for the regional event. Cosmetology contestants cannot bring their long hair manikin set with rollers and/or preset/pre-arranged. For example the hair cannot be crimped before contest starts. Long hair manikin can only be pre-colored, washed, and dried in preparation for the competition. Click here for more information.

Crime Scene Investigation – Students participating in the SkillsUSA Tennessee regional Crime Scene Investigation competition should be prepared to investigate a mock scene, including but not limited to:
  • crime scene security
  • dusting for fingerprints
  • collecting and bagging evidence
  • measuring and sketching
Contestants should bring CSI kit with the materials to accomplish the above tasks.

Criminal Justice – Contestants need to bring the necessary equipment which would be on a standard training duty belt and be prepared for a uniform inspection and an interview in addition to their scenario. (No real weapons or chemical sprays) Possible scenarios may include:
  • Patrol Traffic Stop to include radio communication and possible DUI.
  • Disturbance call to include a person who is intoxicated or mentally unstable.
  • Noise complaint to include juvenile law procedures.

Job Interview – Contestants will complete a job application on site. Contestants should bring three hard copies of their resume for the interview portion of the contest.

Welding Fabrication –
  • The Welding Fabrication regional contest will be a written test only based off of the attached document.
  • All three team members must take the exam at the regional contest.
  • As with all other SkillsUSA contests, only one team from each school may compete in this event.
  • The top three (3) teams from each region will advance to the State Leadership and Skills Conference.
  • Dress code: official SkillsUSA white polo shirt and black pants, and black shoes
